Simple Slow Cooker Chicken Recipes

Dinner ToastChicken is one of the most popular meats to cook in a crockpot. Not only is it versatile enough to allow you to make all kinds of wonderful meals, but it also does well when slow-cooking. Chicken is naturally mild, so you can add all kinds of other ingredients to slow cooker chicken thigh recipes, whole chicken slow cooker recipes and other ones, and allow the chicken to marinate in the ingredients as it cooks, soaking up maximum flavor.

Whole Chicken Slow Cooker Recipes

If your crockpot is oval-shaped, you will be able to get a whole chicken in there, rather than just chicken parts. If you have yet to purchase your slow cooker, then an oval shape is recommended for this reason.

There are various whole chicken slow cooker recipes which you can make it your crockpot and the fact that you can just add the chicken and your chosen sauce ingredients and leave the chicken to cook means you do not even need to be home while your meal cooks. This convenience plus the wonderful results that slow-cooking give are two great reasons to choose whole chicken slow cooker recipes.

Slow Cooker Chicken Thigh Recipes

Chicken thighs are more flavorful than chicken breast because they contain more fat. Before adding chicken thighs to the crockpot, it is best to trim off any obvious fat or gristle, and the remainder will just melt away into the sauce. You can choose from lots of different slow cooker chicken thighs recipes. Perhaps you enjoy fragrant citrus chicken dishes, spicy international chicken recipes, or another type of slow cooker chicken thigh recipes.

Choosing Slow Cooker Recipes for Chicken

So which slow cooker recipes for chicken are you going to make? This very much depends on how many people you are going to feed, how much time you have to prepare the recipe and what kind of flavors you are aiming for. If you are feeding a crowd, you might like to cook a lot of chicken wings or drumsticks and make some nice side dishes to go along with your slow-cooked chicken.

For a family dinner, whole chicken slow cooker recipes are always a good idea. A lot of crockpot chicken dishes can be frozen too, so if you are only cooking for yourself or you and a partner, you can still make the full recipe and just freeze half of it for next time.

Cooking Tips for Crockpot Chicken Recipes

Chicken breasts cook faster than thighs because they are leaner. You can fully cook a chicken breast in a couple of hours if you use your crockpot’s high setting. If you plan to be out all day, you can either use the low setting or choose a cut of chicken with a longer cooking time, else the chicken will be overdone by the time you get home.

Although slow-cooked chicken is very nice, the skin will not get as brown as roasted or grilled chicken, so you might want to finish the chicken off in the oven or under the broiler if a crispy skin is important to you. Not everybody is bothered about this though, and you can peel off the skin before adding the poultry to your crockpot easily enough if you do not want to use it.

Recipe: Marinated Indian Chicken Masala Skewers

These mouthwatering chicken skewers are simple to prepare and they are the perfect solution if you are looking for something easy to make and delicious. The combination of garam masala, cumin, turmeric, coriander, ginger, garlic, and more in this chicken masala recipe really gives the chicken an authentic Indian flavor, and soaking the poultry in the marinade rather than just using a sauce really infuses the chicken with the exotic spice flavor. You can use metal or wooden skewers, although of course metal ones do not need to be soaked in water like the wooden ones do. The wooden ones might ignite on the grill unless you soak them, and then some of your precious chicken masala might fall down the grate, so avoid that at all costs!

The side dishes for these chicken masala skewers are up to you, although rice and a simple green salad would make great accompaniments. You might like to try naan bread instead of the rice, or even offer some homemade potato salad, since the cool creaminess of that would contrast wonderfully with the spicy chicken masala skewers.

You can bake this chicken masala recipe if you prefer or if the weather is not suitable for firing up the grill. If you are going to bake the chicken, you do not need to thread it on to skewers; you can simply bake it in an ovenproof dish. Another option would be pan-frying, although the smoky flavor a charcoal grill imparts to chicken means that grilling is the best option if you want to achieve the tastiest results. This authentic Indian chicken recipe is sure to delight your family because the flavor is so good.

Grilled Chicken Marinade Recipes

Marinating your chicken prior to grilling it is a very good idea. You will be able to choose from many wonderful chicken marinade recipes and give your chicken a fantastic flavor. If you plan to grill your marinated chicken, you might want to think about compatible marinades.

For example, sweet ingredients like sugar, molasses, or honey often scorch over a naked flame, so if you are grilling your chicken it might be best not to use a sweet marinade, unless you do not mind the charred black exterior. Char-grilling gives food a mouthwatering smoky taste, so if you are making a marinade calling for liquid smoke or other smoky ingredients, you might not need to add those.

Pretty much any marinade for chicken will work as a grilled chicken marinade though, so if you usually use a favorite marinade for pan-fried or baked chicken, why not grill the chicken instead, to experience a slightly different flavor and texture?

How to Marinate Chicken for the Grill

Let your chicken soak for long enough before grilling it. If you are using a marinade featuring lemon juice, lime juice, vinegar or another acidic ingredient, then bear in mind chicken can go mushy if you over-marinate it. Half an hour’s soaking in an acidic marinade should be sufficient.

If you are using something else, then you can marinate the chicken all day if you want, or even longer. Always marinate the poultry in the refrigerator for food safety reasons.

You can take your pick from lots of different grilled chicken marinade recipes, opting for something spicy, something fruity, and something international and exotic, or whatever takes your fancy. Grilled chicken is lovely with all kinds of side dishes, from potato salad to fries, baked potatoes, or rice, and the flavor of grilled chicken which has been marinated first is exceptional.

A one or two pound bird should be enough to serve two or three people. You can roast, stew, braise, or poach a whole chicken in the crockpot, and you can use any herbs, spices, or seasonings you fancy.

If you want to cook chicken in the crockpot, you will need to unwrap your whole chicken and rinse it. Discard any innards.
