  • Use the best ingredients you can afford. Obviously, you do not have to use Wagyu or Kobe beef but try to use the freshest meat you can get hold of. Choose a good cheese and use fresh salad ingredients. It will make all the difference in the finished cheeseburger.

  • Put a couple of ice cubes under the lid, just after adding the cheese to the meat. The ice will create plenty of steam as it melts and this steam helps to melt the cheese smoothly and evenly, rather than just at the edges.
  • If you are using a cheese that turns to liquid or melts very rapidly, crumble it over the burger when you have removed it from the heat. Blue cheese and goat cheese need to be spread on the burger or crumbled on, else you will get a mess in the skillet or grill and not much cheese on your cheeseburger!
  • Cheese dripping on to a charcoal grill can cause dangerous flare ups so move the burgers away from the direct heat for the last minute or two of cooking time.
  • Match the cheese to the meat. For beef hamburger recipes, you can use pretty much any cheese you fancy or even a combination of two or three cheeses. If you are making turkey burgers, Swiss cheese is good or the sharp flavor of cheddar. Goat cheese is soft and smooth and very nice with veggie burgers. Smoked cheese gives an interesting flavor too.
  • Add some extra toppings. Sometimes plain cheeseburgers are the best cheeseburgers but you can also add extra toppings to enhance your homemade cheeseburger recipes. Caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, pickles and crispy bacon all go wonderfully in cheeseburger recipes.
  • You can use thin cheese slices, thick cheese slices, shredded cheese, or coarsely grated cheese when making a cheeseburger recipe. Thick cheese slices might not melt in the middle though but some people prefer cold cheese on their hot burger. Experiment with different types of cheese and you will soon discover your favorite.
